Carmenère Tasting with the Wines of Chile
www.winesofchile.ca
Join us on October 24 for an in depth tasting and overview of Carmenère, Chile’s signature grape.
Carmenère, a member of the Cabernet family of grapes, whose name originates from the French word for crimson (carmin).
Its origins began in the region of Bordeaux, France. After the Phylloxera plague in 1867 nearly destroyed all the vineyards of Europe, Carmenère grapevines were presumed extinct.
Imported by Chilean growers from Bordeaux before the plague, Carmenère was frequently confused with Merlot vines and inadvertently collected and processed with Merlot grapes. In 1994, it was confirmed this vine was actually Bordeaux Carmenère, and a new era of winemaking began.
Chile produces the vast majority of Carmenère wines available today, and as the Chilean wine industry grows, so do the possibilities.
We look forward to seeing you there. Salud!
